Meryl Streep was born June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey. She began her career on the New York stage in the late 1960s and appeared in several Broadway productions. She began appearing in films in the 1970s, and soon began earning both nominations and awards. Equally able to wow audiences in drama, comedy, and musicals, she has come to be considered one of the greatest actresses of our time.

Early Career

Born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey. Meryl Streep is considered one of the greatest actresses working today. A graduate of Vassar College and Yale Drama School, she is equally adept at performing on stage or in front of the cameras. Streep began her career on the New York stage in the late 1960s and appeared in several Broadway productions, including a 1977 revival of the Anton Chekhov dramaThe Cherry Orchard.
Meryl Streep broke into films in the 1970s with a role in the dramaJulia (1977). The next year she appeared in The Deer Hunteropposite Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. That same year, she won her first Primetime Emmy for her role in the film Holocaust. In 1979, her portrayal of a woman who abandons her family only to come back and fight for custody of her son in Kramer vs. Kramer brought Streep her first Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress.

More Career Highlights

A chameleon on screen, Meryl Streep spent much of the 1980s submerged in a variety of roles. In Sophie's Choice (1982), she convincingly played a Polish woman traumatized by her experiences during the Holocaust. Streep won her second Academy Award-her first for Best Actress-for her work on this film. In Out of Africa(1985), she took on the role of a Danish plantation owner living in Kenya. The role earned her another Academy Award nomination.

As she reached her forties, Streep continued to find challenging roles-a feat many mature actresses have struggled with in Hollywood. She received an Academy Award nomination for her work in several films, including two big-screen adaptations-one ofCarrie Fisher's novel Postcards from the Edge (1990) and the other Robert James Waller's romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County (1995), in which she starred opposite Clint Eastwood.

By the start of the new millennium, Meryl Streep was as busy as ever. In 2002, she appeared in two critically acclaimed films - The Hours and Adaptation. Streep was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of author Susan Orlean in Adaptation. The following year, Streep lit up the small screen in the television adaptation of the award-winning play Angels in America. She won her second Emmy Award for her work on the program, which had her tackling several roles.

Later Roles

Streep got a chance to show some of her comic skills as a villain in the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate (2004). Continuing to explore light-hearted fare, she starred in Prime (2005), a romantic comedy with Uma Thurman and Bryan Greenberg. Streep played psychoanalyst Lisa Metzger, whose client falls in love with her son. She also played the inimitable magazine editor, Miranda Priestly, inThe Devil Wears Prada (2006), for which she earned Academy Award, SAG and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress. That same year, she was cast as country music singer Yolanda Johnson in Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and continued in musical roles as Donna in the film adaptation of theABBA musical, Mamma Mia! (2008).
Returning to more serious work, Streep appeared in the 2008 filmDoubt, which addresses sexual abuse in the Catholic church. She played a nun who becomes suspicious of a priest's behavior (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) toward a young student. Streep earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, as well as a SAG award for Best Actress.
For her next project, Streep took on one of the culinary world's most beloved figures, Julia Child. She played the famous chef in the film Julie & Julia, based on the best-selling nonfiction book of the same title. For this role she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and received an Academy Award nomination for this performance. She then starred in Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy It's Complicated, with co-stars Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, which earned her a Golden Globe nod.
In 2011, Streep received widespread acclaim for her work in The Iron Lady. She portrayed former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, a dynamic and forceful politician, who was both admired by some and detested by others. While Thatcher was called cold and unfeeling, Streep believed that Thatcher "was canny about the fact that in order to be taken seriously, she wasn't able to show certain emotions because she was a woman." Streep's thoughtful and nuanced performance as Thatcher garnered her several awards, including a Golden Globe.
The Iron Lady also brought Streep her third Academy Award in 2012. In her acceptance speech, the gifted performer seemed to be especially modest and self-effacing. "When they called my name, I had this feeling that I could hear half of America was go, 'oh no, come on why her again?'"
Commenting on her last Academy Award victory, "I was a kid when I won this, like, 30 years ago. Two of the [current] nominees were not even conceived," Streep explained. While she may be a industry veteran, the Academy Awards still have a special meaning to this legendary star. "I thought I was so old and jaded, but they call your name and you just go into a sort of white light," Streep said later.
Streep has been married to sculptor Don Gummer since 1978. The couple has four adult children, including daughter Mamie Gummer, who has been pursuing a career as an actress.

Korina Maria Sanchez-Roxas is a Filipina broadcast journalistTV host and commercial endorser.

Early life

Korina Sanchez was born on October 5, 1964 in Hong Kong. Her father, Ramon P. Sanchez, Sr. (1919–2004), was the General Manager of then Hong Kong landmark, Ambassador Hotel. She is the only girl of Ramon and Celia Sanchez's brood of five children. When the family came back to the Philippines, her father set up a successful carpet company, Woolcraft, Inc.
She attended St. Theresa's College, Quezon City for her elementary and secondary education, and then Maryknoll College (now Miriam College), where she earned a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts. Her first love was writing, but she was also active in extra-curriculars like singing, theater, public speaking, and high school varsity volleyball. In college, Korina excelled in courses related to creative writing, thesis writing and speech. She also completed a third-level French language course at the Makati-based Alliance Francaise de Manille. Sanchez dreamt to be in the performing arts, but she believed her "calling had always been in the field of information and communication".

[edit]Career

From being a station weathergirl at the then Marcos government-run Maharlika Broadcasting System under the supervision of former Information Minister Greg Cendaña,[1] she advanced to be the hourly newsbreak announcer. In 1986, after the EDSA Revolution, Sanchez joined the reopened ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation as a reporter. President Ferdinand Marcos had closed down the Lopez-owned station but it was returned to the Lopez family in 1986. She became executive producer and host to programs such as 'Magandang Umaga Po' with then co-anchor Noli de Castro, 'Bayan Ko Sagot Ko', 'Hoy Gising!', 'Options', 'Balitang K', 'Isyu 101' and 'Pulso: Aksyon Balita'.
When de Castro ran for public office in 2001, Sanchez became the station's first solo woman anchor for its flagship news program 'TV Patrol'.
In 2003, Sanchez was asked to pinch-hit as co-host with actress Kris Aquino. The tandem clicked and what was supposed to be a two-week stint became a hit sixteen-month talk show. 'Morning Girls with Kris and Korina' ended in May 2004 after Sanchez was offered a slot on 'Rated K: Handa Na Ba Kayo?', a Sunday newsmagazine show.
Sanchez also had a successful career in radio through DZMM, ABS-CBN's Metro Manila radio station. She did socio-political commentary with longtime friend and colleague Ted Failon, who was also her co-anchor in Hoy Gising!. Their program was first entitled Aksyon Ngayon, and then renamed Tambalang Failon at Sanchez. When Failon was elected Congressman of the first district ofLeyte province, Sanchez hosted the program on her own and it was renamed Korina sa Umaga. Three years later, the show reverted to Tambalang Failon at Sanchez after Failon opted not to run for another term.
In 2004, she was appointed ABS-CBN's Chief Correspondent for Philippine & Global Operations.[2]
After almost two years hiatus from newscasting, she was re-installed as news anchor at Bandila, the news program of ABS-CBN (replacing Insider). Her pilot episode ran on 3 July 2006. On 10 July 2006, she debuted Korina Today on the ANC.
On 8 May 2009, Sanchez took an indefinite leave from her DZMM radio morning program and evening newscast Bandila, in anticipation of her wedding to Senator Mar Roxas and his presidential bid for the 2010 Philippine elections.[3][4] However, her magazine program Rated K remained part of the network's Sunday programming.[5]
On November 8, 2010, Sanchez together with former Vice President Noli de Castro joined with Ted Failon in TV Patrol.

[edit]Awards

Sanchez has received numerous awards from various award-giving bodies for television, including the Gawad CCP para sa Telebisyon, Community Outstanding Young Achievers Awards, Catholic Mass Media Awards, KBP Golden Dove Awards, PMPC Star Awards for Best Female Newscaster which she shared with almost a decade winner and industry pillar Mel Tiangco. Her recent awards include Best Newscaster for TV Patrol, Best Talk Show Host for Morning Girls with Kris and Korina, Best Radio Program for Korina sa UmagaPipol of the Year 2004, best female newscaster award from UST TV Awards 2005, and Anak TV Seal 2006 favorite Female Personalities.[7] For 2007, Sanchez was awarded as Best Magazine Show host by two award-giving bodies, the Philippine Movie Press Club and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas.[8][9] She was also awarded as one People Asia's Women of Style and Substance.[10] She also ranked number one across all ten female TV personalities in Anak TV Seal's Most Admired Female Personalities for 2007 and 2008.[11][12]
In 2008, Korina Sanchez was given with the highest honor "Ka Doroy Broadcaster of the Year" by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas.[13] During the 2009 New York Festivals, Korina Sanchez was honored with a Silver World Medal for Investigative Report for her expose on substandard food supplements. The New York Festivals also gave Sanchez a finalist certificate for the category Best News Reporter, while her public affairs program Rated K was also awarded with a finalist certificate.[14]

[edit]Controversies

Sanchez was suspended by ABS-CBN for one week effective 21 December 2006, covering all her TV and radio programs. Sanchez was reprimanded by the network for “conflict of interest, several articles that called attention to her activities outside of the company, and an editorial lapse,” when she became a proponent of a firm that produces concerts for MYMP.[15]
In July 2007, Sanchez' name was among those of several celebrities brought up in the controversial case of FrancSwiss, a pyramiding scheme. On 10 July 2007, she released a statement saying, “I categorically deny making any investment in FrancSwiss. It was irresponsible for the National Bureau of Investigation to make the reckless allegation and destroy my reputation as a broadcast journalist, which I carefully built and protected through the years.” [16][17]

[edit]Personal Relationships

On October 27, 2009, Korina Sanchez and Senator Mar Roxas were married in a grandiose wedding ceremony held at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City, with performances by the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Madrigal Singers.
